Competitions

The purpose of the competition is to design and build the most fuel-efficient race vehicle. The vehicles must be powered by an internal combustion engine running on gasoline.

Shell Eco-Marathon

The Shell Eco-Marathon was started in 1939 between scientists working at Shell. Today, it draws universities from all over the globe, and has separate competitions held in North America, Asia, and Europe. The record holding gasoline-powered vehicle by the French team Microjoule achieved 8,914 miles per gallon, compared to the Toyota Prius at 60 miles per gallon.

SAE Supermileage

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Supermileage is similar to the Shell Eco-Marathon, but with more emphasis on student participation. It is held annually in Michigan, and has 45 registered teams in 2009 from various universities around the world.
